The NASB’s translation of “disowned” tells the truth, but misses out on a verbal connection that empowers what precedes and follows this narrative. The HSCB and ESV use the word “denied.” Why is this better? This is the same word used of Peter who denied his Lord. He who had once denied, repented, and calls on others who have denied to also repent. What follows this narrative is the confession of the Sanhedrin concerning the miracle performed by Peter and John – “we cannot deny it!” (Acts 4:16). They confess that they cannot deny! But in so doing, they refurse to confess Who they deny. Again, as is becoming a continual repeated thought in these reviews, words are more than words. They connect the story’s themes, and even connect stories to each other.
