Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Acts 7:39 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

Acts 7:39 NASB  “Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him, but repudiated him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,

Acts 7:39 HCSB  Our forefathers were unwilling to obey him, but pushed him away, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.

Acts 7:39 ESV  Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,

When translating, my personal preference is to leave words as visually oriented as possible. For example, apōtheomai  /  apōthomai translated in the NASB as “repudiated,” literally means to “thrust away, push away” (Thayer). To repudiate is the same result, but the visual picture formed by keeping the literal meaning is striking and personal. As for the difference between the HCSB and the ESV, “to push” is far more common in English than “to thrust” … unless you are fencing.
