Exodus 1-2 – Moses’ Basket Case All Over Again
The last place Moses’ mother should have wanted his basket to flow to, is the exact place God wants. Think of the process:
1) All male newborns are to be put to death. For a mother to have her son taken by an Egyptian means certain death.
2) Jocabed places her 3 month old in a basket, then places it into the Nile. To an Israelite the Nile is nothing more than a river, albeit dangerous with crocodiles. This is almost certain death. To the Egyptians the Nile is a god, as are the crocodiles.
3) Moses’ basket (same Hebrew word for Noah’s ark) floats into the last place a baby Israelite should have been safe – to the daughter of the man who ordered his death.
But…let’s think like an Egyptian. This baby survived two gods. That is probably why Moses survived Pharaoh’s daughter! Even Pharaoh couldn’t turn down a gift from his gods!
Powerfully, God uses the false gods of Egypt to bring redemption and salvation to His people. Sound familiar? God powerfully used the false god of this world to crucify His Son, so as to bring redemption and salvation through His resurrection. Moses’ basket all over again!
The lesson for us is this: Never underestimate God because it is impossible for us to predict how God will fulfill His plans. So if you find yourself in the last place you expected, consider it is the right place to be for what God wants. Even if you are on the verge of being a basket case.
