Philemon 12 – Onesimus’ Return
V.12 – Onesimus’ Return
This “child” of Paul’s did runaway, but he repented, became a Christian, and is now going back on his own free will (Deut.23:15). Paul assuredly tutored him in his duty both as a Christian and a slave.
Tychicus most likely accompanied Onesimus with the letter (Col.4:7 ‑ if the destination of the letter was Colossae). This would no doubt provide protection for the slave. A third party would be needed to verify the document (they can be forged) and because runaway slaves are not in good standing with the law. Tychicus would also provide comfort and strength to Onesimus during the journey, helping him not to turn and run once more.
