1 Peter 3 – A Woman’s Subjection and a Man’s Protection
A Woman’s Subjection and A Man’s Protection
1 Peter 3:1-6 clearly teaches the woman is to subject herself. Contrary to human cultures, subjection doesn’t mean inferiority.
• Positionally to her Husband – She is in subjection. This is functional inequality.
• Positionally to her God – She is a coheir of the grace of life ALONG WITH HER HUSBAND! This is ontological equality.
Husbands are given three reasons as to living with their wives in an understanding way to direct their behavior towards their wives:
• As with a weaker vessel, therefore the wife is to be protected from being vulnerable to him!
• As a coheir of the grace of life, therefore the wife is equal to him in God’s sight.
• So that the husband’s prayers will not be hindered.
Malachi 2:10-16 might be the background text for 1 Peter 3:7:
• Both contain something needing protection (Malachi 2:11).
• Both contain equality (Malachi 2:10,15).
• Both contain unheard worship (Malachi 2:13).
• Both contain a warning (Malachi 2:16)
Not all references to the Old Testament are quoted. Many are alluded to.
A woman’s subjection to her husband is not a husband’s right to impose his will. Women are saying to their husbands, “I trust you.” So men, earn and respect that trust. Treat her “as a weaker vessel”, by protecting her – especially from yourself.
