Acts 1:18-19 – NASB vs. HSCB vs. ESV
Acts 1:18-19 NASB (Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. (19) And it became known to all who were living in Jerusalem; so that in their own language that field was called Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
Acts 1:18-19 HCSB (2004) Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages; and falling headfirst, he burst open in the middle, and all his insides spilled out. (19) This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that in their own language that field is called Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood.
Acts 1:18-19 HCSB (2010) (18) Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages. He fell headfirst and burst open in the middle, and all his insides spilled out. (19 ) This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that in their own language that field is called Hakeldama (that is, Field of Blood ).
Acts 1:18-19 ESV (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. (19) And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
The obvious difference between the NASB and ESV, versus the HCSB is the use of parentheses. This implies what I think is correct, that Luke inserted this in the middle of Peter’s speech for the sake of Theophilus’ understanding. Not having the parentheses gives the impression Peter is saying this to his brethren. But why would Peter say, “in their own language”?
