Acts 20:7 – Why Precedes What
The attitude and desire of the Troas Christians gathering on the first day of the week to break bread should be more instructive to us than the simple fact that they did (Acts 20:7). Why precedes what. Following their example of what without following their example of why leads to formalism and empty tradition. Remember, the Christians of Troas did not have Acts 20:7 to teach them to assemble for the Lord’s Supper. They had something greater: the resurrection of Jesus on the first day of the week; their resurrection in baptism remembering Jesus’ first-fruits resurrection; and their hope for the final resurrection on the last day. Sunday is resurrection day.
