Acts 2:23 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV
Acts 2:23 NASB this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.
Acts 2:23 HCSB Though He was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail Him to a cross and kill Him.
Acts 2:23 ESV this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
Due to the fact that the HCSB in other passages correctly translates “tree” instead of “cross” (Acts 5:30), I was curious about the word “cross” in 2:23. Then I discovered the ESV is the most accurate of the three, for the original language is best translated by using “crucified” because the word for cross or tree is not there. Adding “to a cross” is a noun when the language is just a verb – nailed or crucified.
