Acts 3:1 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV
Acts 3:1 NASB Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer.
Acts 3:1 HCSB Now Peter and John were going up together to the temple complex at the hour of prayer at three in the afternoon.
Acts 3:1 ESV Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.
One of the times that “optimal equivalence” is superior to a literal word for word, “formal equivalent” philosophy is the example found in the above verse. The “ninth hour” is 3:00 PM. This is a historical fact, and not an interpretive matter. See also Acts 10:3,9,30.
It will also be noticed that the HCSB uses the phrase “temple complex” to differentiate the outer courts from the temple proper.
