Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Acts 3:13-14 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

Acts 3:13-14 NASB  “The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you delivered and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him.  (14)  “But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,

Acts 3:13-14 HCSB  The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him.  (14)  But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked to have a murderer given to you.

Acts 3:13-14 ESV  The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him.  (14)  But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,

The NASB’s translation of “disowned” tells the truth, but misses out on a verbal connection that empowers what precedes and follows this narrative. The HSCB and ESV use the word “denied.” Why is this better? This is the same word used of Peter who denied his Lord. He who had once denied, repented, and calls on others who have denied to also repent. What follows this narrative is the confession of the Sanhedrin concerning the miracle performed by Peter and John – “we cannot deny it!” (Acts 4:16). They confess that they cannot deny! But in so doing, they refurse to confess Who they deny. Again, as is becoming a continual repeated thought in these reviews, words are more than words. They connect the story’s themes, and even connect stories to each other.
