Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Acts 4:23 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

Acts 4:23 NASB  When they had been released, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.

Acts 4:23 HCSB  (2004) After they were released, they went to their own fellowship and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.

Acts 4:23 HCSB  (2010) After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them.

Acts 4:23 ESV  When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them.

The only comments I want to make concerning this verse are: 1) each translation adds a word after “own.” 2) The HCSB changed from “fellowship” to “people” in the updated version, and I prefer the updated version. 3) Only the NASB shows that the word is added. Some people prefer, like me, for the translators to show which words are added. I think the brackets are helpful and unobtrusive. Most versions do not visual show added words. The NASB usually does, and sometimes the HCSB does. But the NASB method of putting the added words in italics is misleading. Today italics show emphasis, and therefore the opposite effect happens when people see italics in the NASB. Instead of the italics demonstrating this word is added, people think the italics show this word is extra special. Kind of ironic, don’t you think?
