Acts 5:17 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

Acts 5:17 NASB  But the high priest rose up, along with all his associates (that is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy.

Acts 5:17 HCSB  Then the high priest took action. He and all his colleagues, those who belonged to the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.

Acts 5:17 ESV  But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy

“Took action” is literally “rose up.” The reason why I prefer the NASB and ESV is because of the irony, whether intended or not by the Holy Spirit, in using anistēmi. This word in Acts is often used of the resurrection, of God raising Jesus from the dead (Acts 2:24,32). So the party, who did not believe in the resurrection, who did not believe Jesus rose up, “rose up” against the resurrection.

Also, in v.34, the text says that Gamaliel “stood up” (NASB; HCSB; ESV). This is the same word used in 5:17. He rose up against those who rose up against Him who rose up!

Now THAT is a funny (and clearly accurate) observation! I’ll never again read that verse without thinking of the irony clearly intended by God in inspiring the text that way.
