Acts 7:43 HCSB No, you took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship. So I will deport you beyond Babylon!
Acts 7:43 ESV You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’
To metoikizō is more than to “remove” (NASB). It is “to transfer as a settler or captive, that is, colonize or exile” (Strong). Also, it is a verb, contrary to how the ESV words it, which is unnecessarily wordy – “send you into exile.” The simple and specific “deport” is both literal and succinct.
This verse also demonstrates the three different ways the translations handle quotes from the OT. The NASB puts them in small caps, while the HCSB uses bold print, and the ESV does nothing. This is just personal preference, but I do appreciate a different visual look because it makes it easier to find OT references – that is why I like the words of Jesus in red. When reading out of my Bible, the bold print is easier on the eyes than the small caps. The only disadvantage that I have found is that when I write, I like to put the Bible quotes in bold to differentiate it from my own comments. Of course, I then loose the visual difference displayed by the HCSB when they put only the OT quotes in bold.
