Don’t Be One
Husbands and wives shouldn’t always be “one”. Let me tell you a story, a true story, of a husband and wife.
- The tragedy happens in the beginning
- Satan tempts
- There is a lie
- Those who were one in God become one in disobedience
- The story is about evil knowledge
- The story is about death
If you think this is Adam and Eve, it is, and it isn’t. Acts 5 tells the tragic story of two believers in the beginning of New Creation. Ananias and Sapphira are husband and wife. Instead of the wife leading the husband as per Eve and Adam; here the lead instigator is the husband – “He kept back part of the proceeds with his wife’s knowledge” (Acts 5:2). Together they try to deceive Peter and the church; which is lying to the Holy Spirit and testing the Spirit of the Lord (5:3,9). Peter asks, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart?” (5:3). Ultimately the lie, the conspiracy, their wrong-headed and wrong-hearted “oneness” led to their death. Be one, unless being one leads to being wrong.
