Ephesians 4:4-6 – The Seven One’s
The 7 Ones of Unity (Ephesians 4:4-6): Can we redefine these as “important” instead of essential? Can we expand the biblical explanations to expand fellowship? The one most are willing to do this to is “one baptism.” As long as it is considered “important,” why, who, how, when, and all the rest are unessential. To show the inconsistency of this, these advocates at least demand that it be considered “important,” so they still are requiring something. To further show the inconsistency in this, let’s see if we can do that to all of the other 7 Ones of Unity: “One Body” – Can we define this to exclude different races like some wanted to in the first century? “One Spirit” – Can we turn the Spirit into an inanimate force like the JW’s do? “One Hope” – Can we turn this into reincarnation instead of resurrection like the Hindu’s do? “One Lord” – Can we deny Son of God came into the flesh like the gnostics and docetists of John’s day? “One Faith” – Can we teach one gospel for the Gentiles and another for the Jews like some teach today? “One God and Father” – Can we change who this God is into the Baal of the Canaanites, as long as people think believing in God is important? If we can’t redefine these others differently than the the Holy Spirit does, then why do we think we change baptism from an immersion to sprinkling, from to repenting believers to infants, from for the forgiveness of sins to because of forgiveness of sins? To change these from what the Bible describes is no longer Christianity, no longer “The Way;” it’s just being religious. Can just being religious save? Paul said the Ephesians, and all Christians were to “diligently keep the unity” (4:3). They were united in what they believed, believing the same things as defined by God. If they can do it, so can we; and so we must.
