Ephesians 5:23-25 – I Am The Head of My Wife
I am the head of my wife. The head honcho, the boss, the big guy. Without apology and with no reservation, I say that. My wife is to listen to and obey me. Such talk is not politically correct, but it is biblically correct. In some homes such talk is not safe, either.
My position is not like the man who on Judgment Day saw two lines entering heaven. Above each gate was a sign. One sign read, “For Hen-Pecked Husbands.” Every soul but one lined up behind that sign. The one exception stood under the sign which read, “For Non-Hen-Pecked Husbands.” Curious, an angel asked why he stood there. The answer? “My wife told me to!”
People joke about wives and husbands, and how the wife is “the boss.” Too often jocularity inoculates the pain of the truth. Such joking makes me uncomfortable because of what the Bible says.
Ephesians 5:23-25 NASB For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. (24) But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. (25) Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,
Jesus is the head. Therefore every decision He makes for the church is for our good, not His. As the head He died so that the church could live. As the head, He rules and the church listens and obeys. As the head, Jesus serves (Matthew 20:28). As the head, he washed the disciples’ feet (John 13). That’s what it means to be the head, biblically. That’s what it means to be the boss, biblically. The head serves. The head puts himself last.
I am the head of my wife. And as the head, I am the foot!
