Are We Led by the Spirit and How
ARE WE LED BY THE SPIRIT AND HOW? To borrow and adapt an old phrase, “God in Spirit, who at sundry times and in divers manners led the fathers by miraculous ways, hath in these last days led us by the Spirit in grander ways”.In days past, the Holy Spirit led Israelites by pillar of fire by night and a cloud by day. He led by filling men to speak miraculously by tongues and prophecy. Today He leads differently for the same purposes, directing us towards eternity. [ ] Pillars of fire and a cloud led the Israelites in everyday directions towards their promised land. Today, we are led by Holy Spirit, according to Galatians 5, by walking according to the fruit of the Spirit. What are these qualities of “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control”? They are attributes of the Holy Spirit. They are attributes of God. Imitate God (Ephesians 5:1), by imitating the attributes of the Holy Spirit. This is how we are led in the right direction in every day decisions. Ask, “What would the Holy Spirit do?”[ ] Miraculous prophecies, tongues, and other forms of God breathing out His word by the Holy Spirit has been written down as scripture. These “sacred Scriptures…are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus…. (and) is breathed out by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:15-17). Ask, “What did the Holy Spirit already reveal?”The old ways and days might appear more visually and aurically exciting. That is, as a spectacular spectacle. And yet, knowing how to behave every day because we know how and what the Spirit would do, isn’t that grander? And knowing the whole plan of God, instead of bits and pieces which the prophets and even the angels longed to understand (1 Peter 1:10-12), isn’t that grander?Are you being led by Spirit in these later days?
