1 John 2:16 – NASB vs HCSB vs ESV
NASB (16) For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
HCSB (16) For everything that belongs to the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s lifestyle — is not from the Father, but is from the world.
ESV (16) For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
The main difference is how the third category of sin is translated. Most literally as in word for word it is as the ESV has it, “pride of life.” The NASB adds “boastful” into the text. The HCSB interprets it and so renders it “pride in one’s lifestyle.” How it is translated depends upon whether the genitive bios/life is understood to be the object or subject of pride. Is the life filled with pride because of things; or is there pride in the life itself?
