2 Corinthians 2:13-7:7 – Paul’s “Preaching Trip”
Paul’s “Preaching Trip” (2 Corinthians 2:13-7:7) – Ironically, Paul goes on a little preaching trip after he stops going on his big preaching trip. What I mean is, after mentioning that he leaves Troas to find Titus, where he was evangelizing due to God’s open door, Paul goes on a tangent about his preaching ministry. This is begun with a doxology of praise (2 Cor.2:14a). He doesn’t come back to his point about Titus until 7:6-7. In between, Paul makes a wonderful case for his gospel as compared to the super-apostles, who are marketing God’s message for profit (2:17). “The Nature of Paul’s Ministry:” 1. Triumphant (2:12-17); 2. Accredited (3:1-3); 3. Glorious (3:4-18); 4. Honest (4:1-6); 5. Suffering (4:7-18); 6. Hopeful (5:1-10); 7. Devoted (5:11-17); 8. Reconciling (5:18-21); 9. Approved (6:1-10) (Charles R. Eerdman, The Second Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians, p.17). So while it is common to write that 2 Corinthians is not as doctrinal as some other of Paul’s epistles, we see doctrine coming through quite personally through Paul’s life. Come to think of it, shouldn’t that be true of all of us?
