2 Timothy 1 – Timothy as Moses
In 2 Timothy 1 we find Paul telling Timothy not to be afraid of his friend’s chains, nor to be ashamed of the testimony about the Lord. The gospel teaches this in Jesus, but also the gospel as found in the Old Testament taught to Timothy by his mother and grandmother (3:14-15). Timothy is to be like Moses, not afraid of Israel’s chains, nor ashamed of Yahweh’s testimony before Pharaoh. Such an application cannot be too askew as Paul recounts Moses in Pharaoh’s out before Jannes and Jambres (3:8). That is how the Old is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work (3:16-17).
