John 14:9 – White House Tree Cut Down
“Tree that’s been at White House since 1800’s to be removed.” That was the headline. Being curious why, I read the article. Was it a political hackjob piece? Was it a self-serving decision based on White House aesthetics? Loving trees, I wanted to know. Then I read it was planted by President Jackson in memory of his recently deceased wife. Loving history I wanted the tree to stay. Apparently it was damaged and dying. The fate of the tree is not my point here, though. Here’s a quote from the article: “The tree has been featured prominently in many photos.” So I scrolled through the on-line article. No picture. Advertisement? Yes. Political poll? Yes. Picture of the tree? No. And this reminded me of how we Christians can be. We advertise our likes. People are our politics. But what our life is supposed to be about, people can’t see. Jesus said, “Have I been among you all this time and you do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” (John 14:9). If we are going to talk to people about spiritual things, we must do more than talk. Sinner and saint should be able to “scroll” through our life and see “pictures” of spiritual things. True Christ-like living is more than a headline.
