John 20:1-12 – The Tomb as the Holy of Holies
There was a special inner chamber the High Priest entered once a year with his special robes which he laid down (Lev.16:23), and contained the Ark of the Covenant covered with the Mercy Seat surrounded on each end by Cherubim. There was a special inner chamber our High Priest entered once, where He lay aside His linen robes, and when Mary came to the tomb “she saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where Jesus’ body had been lying” (Jn.20:12). Considering the 4th Gospel’s emphasis on the Tabernacle (Jn.1:14) and Temple (Jn.2:19), should we see the tomb as typifying the Holy of Holies? The Mercy Seat is also a translation for propitiation. After the sacrifice, the Israelite High Priest would enter and then leave when his work was done only to return. After The Sacrifice, The Universal High Priest also would enter and leave when His work was done, only never to return.
