Matthew 1:1 – Abraham Not Terah
Jesus is a biological descendant of Terah, Abraham’s father. But Matthew does not go back to Terah; he starts with Abraham. The reason is Jesus is not a theological, spiritual, and covenant descendant of Terah, an idol worshipper. The covenant line begins with Abraham. Even those of us not biologically related to Terah and Abraham are the spiritual sons of Abraham (Gal.3:28-29), and brothers to Jesus (Heb.2:17). The point is by us being related to Abraham, but not to his father, this shows the ultimate relationship is found in God’s covenant to a new kind of family; one justified not by flesh, but by faith. Me being biologically related to a signer of the Declaration of Independence gets me nothing. Me being covenantly related to Abraham gets me eternity.
