Matthew 12 – Why They Wanted Jesus Dead
Where’s the gospel in the conflict of Matthew 12 between the Pharisees and Jesus? Is it found in Jesus making two claims of divinity? If so, no wonder the Pharisees plotted his death.
1. Matthew 12:6 – “I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.” (CSB).
2. Matthew 12:8 – “For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”” (CSB).
The Sabbath was part of the covenant Yahweh gave the Jews. God is Lord of the Sabbath so if Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath then Jesus is God. And what does God want? Is to imitate Him by showing mercy.
The Temple and Tabernacle both had something in common which made them greater than just buildings. They were filled with the glory of God. If Jesus is greater than the Temple, then Jesus is the glory of God.
The Pharisees were not just so mad they wanted to kill Jesus; they heard what Jesus was saying. Do we?
