Matthew 7:12 – Golden Rule Hermeneutics

If you are the parent, teacher, boss or organization leader, isn’t its aggravating when you tell someone how you want and need something done, but they decide you didn’t really mean what you said so they change or ignore it? Plus, in everyday life, isn’t it frustrating when someone says you said something when you never did? I am responsible for what I say, not for what people say I say. Having to defend myself by saying, “But I didn’t say that” is something everyone has unfortunately experienced. Basically when people put words in our mouth, or change by adding to or taking away from what we say, it is annoying. None of us want or enjoy people treating us this way, so we shouldn’t treat others that way. More importantly and on a higher plane, the way we want others to treat us is how we should treat God. The Golden Rule can easily be applied to the hermeneutical question of “How Do We Establish Authority.” If God says something should be done in a specific manner, then we have no right to say He doesn’t care. If God never said He approves something, then we have no right to say He does. If such simple rules apply to how we treat others, and want to be treated, then let’s treat God with His Golden Rule.
