Perryism – Jesus was born to die so we can die to be born.
When Jesus was born, myrrh was given as a gift (Mt 2.11). When Jesus was crucified, they tried to give Him a drink mixed with myrrh (Mk 15.23). When Jesus died, myrrh was used to bury Him (Jn 19.39). Even in the birth of Jesus we see foreshadowed His death.
Our death and birth can be taken two ways: 1) die to sin and born again spiritually; 2) die physically and “born” again in the resurrection. When reading Romans 6, it is difficult if not impossible to separate the two.
Romans 6:4-5 (HCSB)Â Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life. For if we have been joined with Him in the likeness of His death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of His resurrection.
