Philippians 4:2-3 – The Challenges of “We” and “I”
Philippians 4:2-3: “I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to agree in the Lord. Yes, I also ask you, true partner, to help these women who have contended for the gospel at my side, along with Clement and the rest of my coworkers whose names are in the book of life.” (CSB’17)
Ask and answer these questions:
1. What are we doing right?
2. What are we doing wrong?
3. What am I doing to cause #1?
4. What am I doing to cause #2?
5. What am I doing to solve #1?
6. What am I doing to solve #2?
Most NT book focuses on these questions; even a church as harmonious as in Philippi. Consider the current personal strife between these two ladies, the past spiritual co-work with Paul, and the present people Paul is counting on to help. Where are “we” – Where am I – in these situations? Who am “I” in the above verses?
Many narratives ask these various questions. Therefore to ask and answer is to make ourselves one with the overall story arc of God’s people. Are we willing to accept the challenges of “we” and “I”?
