Romans 1:5; 16:26 – Grace – Unmerited Not Unconditional
Grace is often defined as “unmerited favor.” “Unmerited” does not mean the same as “unconditional.” “Unmerited” means you have not done anything in the past or present to deserve this gift. “Unconditional” means you have not done anything in the past or present to receive this gift. Merited means to earn. Conditional means requirements. To earn means the work equals the award. That is why we cannot earn grace. What can we do that is equal to God? Requirements are from the opposite direction of earning. Requirements focus on the giver not the worker. God is sovereign and has the right to require anything of us to freely receive that which we cannot afford by our actions. Even if God had said our physical life must be forfeited for what we have no right to receive, then it is still unmerited because our physical life is not equal to God’s spiritual immortal life. He simply asks us to trust in Him by obeying. Grace is unmerited, but it conditional. Submit to the Sovereign and He will give you the life you cannot afford.
