Titus 2:10 – What Are We Advertising?
Are we advertising what we think we are? Driving down the road in Tennessee, I noticed a billboard. “Heaven or Hell – Your Choice.” Under “Heaven” the billboard listed John 3:16. Under “Hell” they listed…their phone number! For some reason I don’t think they were advertising what they were advertising – “If you want to go to Hell…Call Us!”
What about us Christians? Are we inadvertently saying the opposite of what we intend? Paul writes but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect (Titus 2:10). Our lives decorate or desecrate the word of God. The ISV translation reads, so that in every way they may make the teaching about God our Savior more attractive. Christians are walking billboards.
This is the old cliché about how people would rather see a sermon than hear one any day. When they watch our lives, what do they see? Do they see contentment or complaining? Do they see holiness or hypocrites? Do they see happiness or hostility? Do they see fairness, or Pharisees? Do they see what they are lacking or what we are lacking? Do they see Heaven or Hell? If they wanted to go to heaven, would they call us?
Are we advertising what we think we are?
