Daniel 7-12 – The Real Purpose of Fake Prophecy?
There is a recurring theme among liberal OT scholars. The Biblical books and authors are not authentic in time or authorship, but written in more “modern” times to help that later generation deal with their situations by re-inventing a past narrative. Daniel didn’t prophesy apocalyptic visions in chapters 7-12, but they were written in his name much later to “comment upon and interpret the crisis of 167—164 B.C.E. that so threatened Jews and Jewishness.” (Brueggemann, An Introduction to the Old Testament, p.354). It’s as if to handle present crises, we need to invent narratives of the past that will give us strength and faith. Such is sad, for it fails to see the providential hand of God through inspiration that the Holy Spirit already foresaw we needed strength and faith and therefore recorded the heroes of the past for all of posterity. It is sad again, because it contradicts the very core of Daniel which is that God is in control of history. Either the God of Daniel is real and could foretell the future, or He is not. The recurring theme among liberal OT scholars is…He is not.
