Ecclesiastes 3:18 – A Reason for Suffering
18 I said to myself [lit., in my heart] concerning the sons of men, “God has surely tested them in order for them to see that they are but beasts.”
Both within Philosophy and Theology the problem of pain, the problem of evil, has been the most troubling argument against the existence of a benevolent God. While not pretending to easily answer the emotional challenge, it can be answered intellectually. Here, and in the following verses of Ecclesiastes 3:18, we see at least one reason for suffering – it teaches us we are mortal. Too often we forget.
