Ezra 10 – Marriage is a Three-fold Covenantal Contract
Marriage is a threefold covenantal contract: personal, spiritual, and social. It is never just about me, it is about others. If I take the other spouse or children out of the equation, marriage fails and they suffer. If I take God out, I fail and everyone suffers. If I forget it is a social contract, then broken marriages, children born out of wedlock, dead-beat dads, unfit mothers, all become society’s problems, wards of the state, and society suffers and fails. “No-fault Divorce,” “Gay Marriage,” “Free Love” all abandons the three-fold covenantal contract. If you want to know what is wrong with our society, it begins with forgetting that marriage and sex is never just about “me.” This can easily be proved by looking at Ezra 10. When the Jews personally married pagan women, they formed personal contracts that involved individual sin (vv.2,6,8,10,11,17). This became an affront to God (v.2,11,14). This also became a problem for all Israel (vv.2,10). Marriage is never just about one or two individuals.
