Creation and Joseph
It is a story of the sun, moon, and stars. It is a story of rule or dominion. It is the story of creation; and of Joseph. These two narratives serve as bookends for Genesis. A major difference is in Genesis the created lights rule from up high. In Joseph’s dream, the sun, moon, and stars are bowing down. In Genesis the lights have dominion over the earth. In Joseph’s pericope, he has preeminence over them. There is more to this imagery than the 11 stars in the dream representing Joseph’s brothers. Joseph represents and foreshadows Jesus. This same Jesus created the heavenly lights, so it is only proper that they bow to Jesus.
