Deuteronomy 4:15-19 – The Form and Image of God
An interesting passage on the image of God is one that states what it is not, not what it is. Because of this, it would be impossible to make an image of the image of God. And although mankind is made in the image of God, male and female are not the image. This passage is Deut.4.15-19. Moses cautions the people that they should not make an idol in any form “because your did not see any form on the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire.” Then Moses proceeds to go more or less backwards in the creation account cautioning them about images: male or female (day 6); beast (day 6); winged creature (day 5), creature that crawls (day 6), fish (day 5), sun, moon and stars (day 4).
So the image of God in Gen.1.26-27 is not the maleness and femaleness but something not seen.
