Genesis 4:17-24 – The Classifieds
I have a wild imagination. It serves me well…usually. My mind can’t help but wonder about the story behind the story. I keep asking “why” which keeps the story real, especially when reading the Bible. But before going there, do you ever find reading the classifieds interesting? For example, one classified read, “Wedding Dress – worn once by mistake.” There’s a story there! A reoccurring phrase in the classifieds is “never used” or “never worn.” Can you say, “unwanted gifts?” When reading what people are selling, try and see the story behind the story.
- ½ carat white gold diamond ring size 6 – There is heartache in that ad.
- AB lounger never used – Do you see good intentions? Either someone bought it for themselves or it was a gift. But good intentions, just like dreams, often come to naught. By the way, how’s your Bible reading coming?
- Cross pen and pencil set. 14k gold fill, never used – This was definitely a present, an unwanted present. How many people do you know who actually buy Cross pens and pencils for themselves? Why do we buy things for people we would never buy for ourselves?
- Divorce sale $2000 worth of cake supplies, $500 – Financial needs often follow marital trouble. God’s way is always best even when it is difficult.
- Framed picture of RJ Reynolds High School – This has graduation present written all over it.
- Toddler boy clothes gently used – Personally I’ve never read of clothes being “gently used” especially by a boy toddler. Do you see an overprotective mother?
I find the above to be fun. The classified are filled with real people. We need to remember the Bible is filled with real people too. When reading little snippets about people’s lives (i.e., Gen.4:17-24; 2 Peter 2:8), remember that there is a story behind the story filled with heartache, good intentions, and trouble caused by sin. It doesn’t take a wild imagination to see that.
