1 Samuel 13:14 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV
1 Samuel 13:14 NASB “But now your kingdom shall not endure. The LORD has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has appointed him as ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”
1 Samuel 13:14 HCSB but now your reign will not endure. The LORD has found a man loyal to Him, and the LORD has appointed him as ruler over His people, because you have not done what the LORD commanded.”
1 Samuel 13:14 ESV But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought out a man after his own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”
Is it possible that certain phrases within the Bible are so common, so part of our collective conscience that the old translation should remain as long as it conveys the truth? The phrase, “a man after His own heart” is one of the most famous descriptions of David. It is also one of the most dear and precious. The HSCB chose to translate this as “loyal to Him.” The poetry and tenderness is gone.
