2 Chronicles 22:11 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

2 Chronicles 22:12

2 Chronicles 22:11 NASB  (11)  But Jehoshabeath the king’s daughter took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and placed him and his nurse in the bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah so that she would not put him to death.

2 Chronicles 22:11 HCSB  (11)  Jehoshabeath, the king’s daughter, rescued Joash son of Ahaziah from the king’s sons who were being killed and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Now Jehoshabeath was the daughter of King Jehoram and the wife of Jehoiada the priest. Since she was Ahaziah’s sister, she hid Joash from Athaliah so that she did not kill him.

2 Chronicles 22:11 ESV  But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were about to be put to death, and she put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Thus Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram and wife of Jehoiada the priest, because she was a sister of Ahaziah, hid him from Athaliah, so that she did not put him to death.

As said before, nuance is an important part of words. Some words show the effect, others, the method. Here the NASB and ESV have the unusual, at least to me, word “stole” to describe the securing of Joash. But that is what the Hebrew means. To simply put “rescue” as does the HSCB is to have the proper result, but not the proper means. I like the NET bible’s translation here, “sneaked.”
