Structure of 2 Samuel and 1 Kings
There is a simple and obvious way to organize the book of 1 Kings. There are 22 chapters. The first 11 are the reign of Solomon, and the rest describe the divided kingdom. Such a division is natural and orderly. However, there is another way, and that is to compare 1 Kings to 2 Samuel’s organization:
2 Samuel
I. 1-10 – Triumph
II. 11-12 – Adultery – David and Bathsheba
III. 13-24 – Tragedy and Division within Family
I Kings
I. 1-10 – Triumph
II. 11- Adultery – Idolatry is Spiritual Adultery in the Bible
III. 12-22 – Tragedy and Division without Kingdom
In the Bible, idolatry is considered spiritual adultery when committed by Israel/Judah the bride of Yahweh. Just as David’s sexual adultery brought division within his own family, where the sword devoured his family; so did Solomon’s spiritual adultery bring division within his kingdom, where the sword devoured the kingdom.
