Judges 1:3 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV
Judges 1:3 NASB Then Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into the territory allotted me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I in turn will go with you into the territory allotted you.” So Simeon went with him.
Judges 1:3 HCSB Judah said to his brother Simeon, “Come with me to my territory, and let us fight against the Canaanites. I will also go with you to your territory.” So Simeon went with him.
Judges 1:3 ESV And Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites. And I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you.” So Simeon went with him.
Sometimes simplifying leaves out important details. Both the NASB and ESV, along with the NET, not only state that a portion of the land belonged to the tribe of Judah, but how it was decided that land went to them – by lot. Of course this lot was determined by God. This process is emphasized in too many verses to recount in both Numbers and Joshua. Sadly the HCSB simply says, “my” leaving out how.
