Dealing with Negative Comments
Someone recently said something about me both positive and negative. When I mentioned it to another, she said she was thankful I didn’t let other’s negative comments affect me (I’m not perfect on that record!). Here’s my response,
“He could have been kidding (he is a friend), but even if he wasn’t, does it make me a happier person to dwell on his negative perspective of me? No. Plus, I sometimes agree with him, I too have that same negative response to me.”
Life is filled with “negativity”.
1. Sometimes it is misperceived as negative when someone is joking.
2. Sometimes it is an honest opinion from a friend who cares about us.
3. Sometimes it is a truth that can’t be denied, but can be worked on with prayer.
4. Sometimes, some things, just don’t need to be said either.
If true, remember, “The wounds of a friend are trustworthy, but the kisses of an enemy are excessive.” (Proverbs 27:6).
If false, remember, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians 4:32).
Again, whether true or false, remember, “The fear of mankind (i.e., could that include what others think of us?) is a snare, but the one who trusts in the LORD is protected. (Pro.29:25)
We can live either caged by other’s opinions of us, or as captives of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 3:1).
