From Chaos to Rest
Once you notice how the 6 days of creation correspond to each other in pairs (1,4; 2,5; 3,6), then something else become apparent.
People have queried why did God rest? He wasn’t tired. Again according to the narrative structure, the reason becomes obvious. Just as each day had a counterpart, so does resting.
[ ] Genesis 2:1-3: “So the heavens and the earth and everything in them were completed. On the seventh day God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, for on it he rested from all his work of creation.” (CSB’17)
[ ] Genesis 1:1-2: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” (CSB’17)
Resting is the result from organizing chaos. While noticing this connection is intellectually stimulating, there is a personal application. If we are to find rest in Jesus (Matthew 11:28), first we need Jesus to take our formless and empty life and give it His purpose.
[ ] 2 Corinthians 4:6: “For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ.” (CSB’17)
