Jesus’ Overwhelming
Jesus told James and John, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup I drink or to be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”” (CSB’17 Mark 10:38)
Jesus’s baptism here is his suffering, so baptism is not literal but metaphorical. He is talking about his suffering overwhelming him. That is why he chose a word which literally means, “immerse”. Jesus would be immersed and overwhelmed in great suffering. Jesus would be covered in great suffering. I doubt anyone thinks his suffering was small, little, or minute.
If you think water baptism can be a sprinkling of a little water, consider Jesus used a word that meant completely covered. That same word describes our baptism. “He that believes and is baptized (immersed, overwhelmed and completely covered by water) will be saved (Mark 16:16).
