Leviticus 10 – 4 Sins of Nadab and Abihu

The story is infamous, but how much do we know? The sons of Aaron were not always the bad guys. They were honored by God which makes their downfall even more shameful (Exodus 24:9).
When Nadab and Abihu brought their fire and incense to the Tabernacle, the WHO and WHERE were, correct. But that was not enough. There were at least 4 sins they committed:
4. WHAT – Unauthorized Fire – Lev.10:1-2
3. HOW – Unholy Behavior – Lev.10:8-11
2. WHEN – Unauthorized Timing – Lev.16:1-2
Let’s go back to the honored moment of of these two brothers: “Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of Israel’s elders, and they saw the God of Israel. Beneath his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as clear as the sky itself. God did not harm the Israelite nobles; they saw him, and they ate and drank.”
(CSB’17 Exodus 24:9-11). Try to picture that in your mind! This brings me to, and here I am inferring, their 4th sin. Before revealing it to you, let me explain the paradigm of the inference. Do you remember Jesus blessing Peter after his messianic confession? Do you remember what Peter did immediately afterward? He rebuked Jesus for His prophesying His death. Then, “Jesus turned and told Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.'” (CSB’17 Matthew 16:23)
What could cause Peter, Nadab, and Abihu to so grievely miscalculate their actions?
1. WHY – UNWARRANTED PRESUMPTION – Exodus 24:9-11
As children of God we, like Peter, Nadab, and Abihu, have innumerable blessings. Despite the song, we can’t ever countour many blessings. Focusing on our ordained relationship, can lead us to think more highly of ourselves which leads to egregious sins. This pridefulness can lead us down the familiar and shameful path of Nadab and Abihu.
