Oscar Wilde’s Definition of Love
Oscar Wilde, who popularly led one of the most hedonistic lifestyles, while on his deathbed, asked his male lover, “Did you ever love any of those boys for their own sake?” The answer for both was the same – no. Regret at how his own pursuit of pleasure left him empty, Mr. Wilde – appropriately named – left this world giving us a definition of love beyond his experience but the kind that makes us whole – loving others for their benefit. The bible calls this agape.
