Psalm 22 – When Reading Scripture is not Enough
When Reading Scripture Is Not Enough
“What passage can I read when I am feeling….?” That’s an oft asked question, so much so some Bibles come with a section of suggested readings for such times. But what do we do when reading is not enough?
Psalm 22 has one of the most poignant and well-known questions: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Keep reading and we find another pertinent question that is in the form of a statement:
• “Our fathers trusted in you; they trusted, and you rescued them. They cried to you and were set free; they trusted in you and were not disgraced.” (CSB’17 Psalms 22:4-5)
The question is, “Why did you help them and not me?” In other words, the Bible is filled with stories of God’s rescuing, healing, power, and so one. Daniel in the lion’s den did not help my grandfather being attacked a Doberman Pincher and German Shepherd!
So what do we do?
1. Acknowledge not every Bible story ends with God stepping in to rescue.
2. Trust that God is in control which allows for man’s freewill.
3. Wait on God’s timetable, which is different than man’s.
4. God might something planned beyond our imaginations.
All the above is seen in the cross. God did not rescue Jesus from dying, but Jesus trusted His Father, who then rescued Him from death – something no one expected.
When any one scripture is not enough, the whole story is!
