The Gospel According to Galatians 4:4-7
Satan does not care that we believe in Jesus, if it doesn’t matter what we believe about Jesus. This short text shows us much about the Gospel, as do many others; however none of which contain all the facts. Seven is often the symbol of completion; although this will not be complete, here are 7 facts about Jesus and his work that defines the Gospel of God in Galatians4:4-7. The gospel is:
1. PROPHETIC – “When the time came to completion”
• Prophecy proves the word of God is not about the words of man about God. No human can know the future as God does.
2. PERSONAL – “God sent his Son”
• Jesus is not just a man, a teacher, prophet, or good man. It matters who we think Jesus is.
3. PHYSICAL – “born of a woman”
• Skeptics have argued that Paul knew nothing of the “virgin birth”. Here Paul does not say Jesus was fathered, but born of a woman.
4. PLAN – “born under the law”
• Jesus was Jewish because the historical plan always involved the nation of Israel. And still does because Jesus is sitting on the throne of David. God’s controlled history of the story is essential to the plan. Part of this plan was Jesus being perfect while he lived under the Law.
5. PURPOSE – “to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons”
• Another way of stating this is God wants us in His purified image, as back in Genesis 1.
6. “PURAL ONESNESS” OF GOD’S NATURE (trinity) – “God sent the Spirit of his Son”
• Understand there is no single human word that can capture the plural oneness of our triune God. But all three are represented in the gospel. God (the Father) sent the (Holy) Spirit of his Son (Jesus).
7. PROVISION – “into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then God has made you an heir.” (CSB’17 Galatians 4:4-7)
• Everything leads to us becoming heirs of God. The whole story has been reworked and rewound. The new creation has began as it once did in the garden when Adam and Eve were God’s heirs on this earth.
