Reading Romans – Robert F. Turner
Sometimes simplicity is found among the morass of scholarship. Of all the New Testament books, Romans is often cited as the most theologically complex. Considering the theme of Romans maybe we should be shocked it is not even more complicated. I heard a review of a certain convoluted commentary on Romans which said that Romans was a commentary on the commentary instead of the other way around. That brings us to “Reading Romans” by Robert F. Turner. Mr. Turner’s most famous works are his “Plain Talk” articles (which included “Stuff About Things”) which illustrated nondenominational Christianity with a down-home clarity rarely matched, if ever. Therefore it is not surprising to see simplicity reign in his “Reading Romans.” Taking the NKJV translation, Mr. Turner expands and explains the text using short non-technical sentences to enhance the reader’s understanding. If you want to understand Romans, I suggest first to read Romans in several translations, and then read “Reading Romans” before picking up any other commentary.
