Hebrews 11:1 – Unseen
Some ironies of faith: Faith is both the assurance of that which is unseen in God, and the display of that which is unseen in me. It is by faith that the unseen is proved as if seen (vv.13,27)
Hebrews 11:13,27
13 All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.
27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing Him who is unseen.
God’s unseen becomes seen in me. My faith is unseen inwardly, until it becomes seen outwardly. The faith that God instills in me is my proof.
Augustine – “Faith is to believe what we do not see; and the reward of this faith is to see what we believe.”
According to Vincent’s Word Studies, “In Hebrews, faith is trust in the divine promises as distinguished from seeing their realisation….” (Vincent, vol.iv, p.363.)
