1 John – Finding Jesus
Jesus in the 1 John
1:1-3 – “What” refers to Jesus and is neuter instead of masculine probably to emphasize the experience: from the beginning, heard, seen, observed, touched, revealed, seen, revealed
1:1 – The Word (logos) of Life
1:3 – His Son Jesus (human) Christ (divine)
1:7 – Blood of Jesus His Son
2:1 – Advocate with the Father
2:1 – Jesus Christ the Righteous One
2:2 – The propitiation for our sins and for those of the whole world
2:6 – “The one who says he remains in Him should walk just as He walked”
2:12 – Sins forgiven because of Jesus’ name
2:13,14 – The One who is from the beginning
2:22 – Jesus the Christ/Messiah
2:22-23 – He who confesses the Son has the Father as well
2:24 – If what we have heard from beginning remains in us, we will remain in the Son and in the Father
2:27 – Jesus sends the anointing which is the Holy Spirit
2:28 – Jesus will appear again
2:29 – Jesus is righteous
2:29 – Born of “Him” (Jesus or Father?)
3:1 – The world did not know “Him” (Jesus or Father?)
3:2 – We will be like Jesus when He returns; we will see Jesus as He is
3:3 – Jesus purifies
3:5 – Jesus was revealed to take away sins; there is no sin in Jesus
3:6 – Remaining in Jesus means not sinning (i.e., not practicing sin)
3:7 – Jesus is righteous
3:8 – Son of God revealed to destroy the works of Satan
3:16 – He laid down His life for us which teaches us how to love
3:23 – Must believe in the name of the Son of God and love one another as He commanded
3:24 – “He”(Jesus?) has given us His Spirit
4:2 – Every spirit who confesses Jesus has come in the flesh is from God
4:2 – The antichrist does not confess Jesus came in the flesh
4:4 – The One who is in us is greater than the one in the world
4:9 – One and only Son
4:10 – The Son is the propitiation for our sins
4:13 – We remain in “Him” and “He” in us; “His” Spirit
4:14 – The Son is the world’s Savior
4:15 – Whoever confesses Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him
4:17 – We are as “He” is in the this world
4:19 – We love because “He” first loved us
4:21 – The command from “Him” the one who loves God must also love his brother.
5:1 – If you believe Jesus is the Christ/Messiah, you are born of God
5:5 – Jesus is the Son of God
5:6 – Jesus Christ came by water, blood
5:9 – The Father testifies about His Son
5:10-12 – If you believe in the Son, you have the testimony within of life within the Son
5:13 – Believe in the name of the Son of God
5:14-15 – Pray to “Him” (Jesus)
5:20 – Son of God came and brought understanding
5:20 – Jesus is the True God and eternal life
One of the areas of disagreement in 1 John is the reference points of many of the masculine pronouns (He, Him, His). The ones I considered to refer to Jesus are listed above.
