Matthew 23:5-12 – Reverend? Boss Lady? Doctor?
Man loves religious titles. Just saw last week a new one for me, “Boss Lady.” Jesus warned about religious titles (Matt.23:7-10), and man keeps inventing new ones. I don’t call anyone Reverend, and I challenge all to obey Jesus in not giving religious titles to anyone. We are all brothers, Jesus said. Today calling a religious figure “Dr. So-and-So” is the same as what Jesus warned against in saying call no man “Master” or “Rabbi.” Ask your preacher why he wants a special title. Jesus said, “Who ever exalts himself will be humbled” (Mt.23:12). Isn’t he exalting himself with a title you can’t wear unless you are like him? Ask your preacher why he wears special robes when Jesus warned about that too (Mt.23:5). Isn’t he exalting himself with clothes that you can’t wear unless you are like him? This is the pride of life.
